Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay's birth occurred on the 24th of August on the 24th of August, 1972, in Long Beach California. DuVernay started to discover her creative and artistic side as a child, thanks to Aunt Denise. Aunt Denise was a nurse and was a night shift worker so she could devote her days to theatre and literature as well as art. She introduced DuVernay to the film of 1961 West Side Story and DuVernay fell in love with it. DuVernay recognized that art is an effective way to spread the cause of activism. DuVernay was trained by her mother, who had a social conscience and instilled DuVernay to express herself through art. DuVernay resided in Compton for most of her childhood, but she would spend every summer with her extended family members living in Lowndes County Alabama. The father of DuVernay's reminiscences recalled the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by the summers she spent in Alabama as inspiration for her next film, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay earned her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. After graduation she was enrolled at her first year at the University of California Los Angeles which she graduated with certificates in English and African American studies. DuVernay began to develop an interest in the field of broadcast journalism while a student. She was an CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay was appointed to watch and search the home of an individual juror. Her disappointment was evident in her journalistic duties and decided to switch over to the field of public relations. DuVernay began her first position as a publicity specialist in an unassuming production studio straight after she graduated from school. She started The DuVernay Agency, her public relations firm in 1999. In addition to PR, the company developed several lifestyle websites like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
